Baked Ham

I am cooking my very first ham tomorrow for Easter dinner. Although Eastern Orthodox Easter is not until next week, we decided to celebrate it tomorrow because it is also Цветница, a Bulgarian spring holiday dating back to pagan times. Anyone who is named after a flower or a tree celebrates their name day. Tonight I did go to my friend Maia's place, who cooked traditional Bulgarian dinner and it was really nice for a change to have someone else explain the customs and tell the history of yogurt.

Pink Shoes and Lemon Drops

Our gallery was nominated for the best gallery on the North Shore and the award ceremony was tonight. The nominations come from the readers of the local paper and are announced in a fancy theatre in West Vancouver. I was excited to get into my role of a West Vancouver socialite and dressed up in a black dress accented with pink rhinestones. I treat these functions as stages for performances. To fully get into my role I had to arm myself with a Starbucks drink, I chose a green tea soy latte. My chevette stood out in the parking lot full of fine German cars but once inside I fully immersed myself into the role. I chatted with a lady in a pink Chanelish outfit with a blond bouffant hairdo, whose dog spa was nominated in the best "Pet Award" category. We talked at length about the upcoming annual westie walk at Lighthouse Park as we nibbled on tuna tataki bites and sipped lemon drop martinis. The North Shore is in a special category for me. It is another world, separated from Vancouver by water and only accessible by a ferry and two bridges. It is all about white glove service, British accents and colonial looking gardens. I feel like it is the 50's when I am there, which is five days a week. A lady once told me that I should add "dahling" to the end of my sentences because apparantly I sound just like Zsa Zsa Gabor.
Back to the nomination gala. We did not win but was still a great show. There was a dance performance with covers of Mama Mia and a guitar solo as we watched slides of inspirational photos from the community. There was even some fake fog released on the stage. Very dramatic.
After the gala, I got home and tossed my pink shoes. The look of the tired West Vancouver socialite.

Last winter I spent a month at a Korean theme park called "Everland". It is about one hour south of Seoul and it is built to resemble Disneyland. I was hired as an English teacher, and together with a group of about 20 more odd people, spent my days living and breathing Everland. We lived at the Everland Hotel, which was actually a love hotel with mirrored ceilings and red shag carpeting. We ate at the Everland restaurant, where we were served by knock off Snow Whites and Seven Dwarfs. But my favourite part was the park itself. I was fascinated by the landmarks surrounding us. There was a Switzerland Village, a Sahara Desert, 50's American Town and a Greek Amphitheatre. I took photos of these wonderful fake structures pretending I was actually at the place they were supposed to represent. I am planning to print them on shot glasses and preserve them as tourist souvenirs. I like that these copies have become better then the reality they copy.

The Von Trapp Sisters

The Von Trapp Sisters is a duo consisting of Lisa Latitude (me) and Loretta Waltz (Deb), who is an accomplished musician with great patience. We have been practicing for about a month for a performance at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver on May 12. It is a cabaret show, with covers of such favourites as Slow Boat to China, Danke Schoen and Tennessee Waltz. It crosses the line between a musical show and an art performance. It has been a challenge for me to fully immerse myself in singing to acoustic guitar and piano without the help of karaoke. I am hoping for plenty of stage props to help me get through my stage fright. And having Loretta beside me keeping the rhythm helps too.

My Very First Post and Shiny Cowboy Boots

So, I have decided to start blogging. I have never been an avid diary keeper but I do enjoy sharing visual inspirations. And I couldn't resist letting this great group of shiny boots go unnoticed. Enjoy!
